Book Review: Laying Down the Law (The Cowboy Way, #4) - Becky McGraw

Synopsis:

Cowboys are a different breed... They work hard, play hard and love harder. It's all about the ride until the right woman makes them fall.

Sheriff Brock Cooper's life is in the toilet. His son is gravely ill with a mystery ailment, the medical bills are piling up, and he is working two jobs trying to make ends meet. This was a far cry from where he thought his life would end up after being a hometown football hero, then a pro player until he washed out. But it is what it is and he's dealing with it, because he's desperate to find help for his son. Melanie Fox hated everything about her hometown whose only claim to fame was it was situated in the same Georgia county where the movie Deliverance was filmed. When she was delivered from that red clay hellhole and the bullies who harassed a nerdy, bookworm at eighteen, Melanie swore she'd never go back. But when she gets a call from the town's new sheriff to tell her that her crazy mother's antics have put her in the hospital, Melanie knows she has to go. But this time, she's going back as Dr. Melanie Fox who no longer wears half-inch-thick glasses, carries around extra fluff or needs anyone's approval. She can't help but wonder though, what her secret first love who crushed her sixteen-year-old heart, would think of her now.

My Thoughts:

What an amazing book! Once I started reading it, I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. And then I didn’t want it to end! I was so captured with the story line and wanted to know what happened with Brock’s son and did Brock and Melanie create a happily ever after or did the evil ex-girlfriend get in the way. There were so many twists and turns in the book that I did not see happening. The book was well written with the writing flowing smoothly creating a pleasurable reading experience.

With so many romance books available, it seems majority are all the same and you feel you are reading the same story just different character names and very little differences to the plot. This romance book was not like that at all! It had its own unique premise and was unlike any other stories that I have read before. It had characters that were likeable, although you really wanted to slap Lucy (the ex-girlfriend) for the things she does. Sadly, there are people just like her in real life and you have to understand those people need help.

My own personal preference but I would have liked to see the reason the boy was sick a little more “hidden” and not so obvious however this did not deter from the story at all. Also the story is a western romance and outside of the main character being a cowboy and sheriff and just a little mention of his ranch it was not heavy on the cowboy aspect. My own preference but I would have liked to see more about the cowboy aspect but again this does not take away from the story at all.

I have not read the other books in this series however after reading this one I am definitely going to go get them. I don’t feel that I missed out on anything or didn’t understand anything from not reading the previous books. This read like a true standalone with a complete story from beginning to end.

If you enjoy reading about cowboys with a unique premise that keeps your attention from beginning to end, then you need to pick this one up and read it!
